Today I Begin a New Life.. pt 4
I Will Persist Until I Succeed
The Test of Life– Life is hard, life is not fair and your success in any venture will be determined by your willingness to accept this and move forward anyway. The easy way out is giving up the instant you hit an obstacle or road block, you just throw up your hands and move on to the next thing. But life isn’t built on the easy way out is it? It takes effort, it takes determination and it takes persistence; that “Never Say Die” attitude can and will get a lot done and create success.
Your Attitude will determine your Altitude. Failure is inevitable, but it’s your attitude and reaction to failure that will make or break your success. There are dozens of quotes and anecdotes that speak about how multiple failures lead to success and the key take-a-way from all of them is to simply keep trying, keep going and learn from each misstep.
The Prizes of life are at the end of each journey. We live in an instant gratification society, and it has conditioned us to expect everything right this second. Between the internet and smart phones, nearly everything is within reach, and we have forgotten that it takes work to create something. Whether it is a body like a Greek God, a seemingly impossible PR, or starting your own business, hard work and time are required to create them. The saying goes: “How do you eat an elephant?.. One bite at a time.” Whatever your goal, you must persist until you have achieved it. Something we talk about all the time at FNS, it’s about getting 1% better everyday knowing that ultimately you will achieve your goal as long as you don’t quit.
Your WHY Power– While not actually part of Scroll 3 this is a perfect time to address your WHY. Being persistent and determined towards a goal assumes that your goal motivates you enough to get past the hard stuff. Your WHY has to be SOO big and your focus on that goal so single-minded that anything that gets in your way are nothing but little bumps in the road. If the opposite is true, than no matter how hard you try, your goal will never be achieved because you will lack the internal driving force to MAKE it happen. So when setting a goal make sure you know why you want it and make sure that that WHY is strong enough to get you past anything that could come up.
The Redefining Failure and Success– Failure and success are greatly misunderstood; some seem to think that the two are mutually exclusive meaning only one can exist at a time. When the reality is that failure and success are mutually inclusive, you can’t have one without the other. By redefining failure and success you can open up a whole new world of possibility. In the simplest of terms, the faster you fail the faster you will succeed. So how do you redefine failure? Failure must be seen as an opportunity to learn. Over the years, I have learned far more from my failures than I have from my successes. And when you begin to understand this, you will no longer fear failing. Now here is the tricky part. How and WHY do you redefine success? Why Redefine Success? We know what it is and it’s awesome, so why should we redefine it? Because Success can create ego and/or complacency. A little success applied incorrectly or under-appreciated can take something with amazing potential and turn it into a disastrous failure very quickly. Both Success and Failure are temporary and must be treated as such. I’m not saying you shouldn’t celebrate success, I’m a HUGE advocate of celebrating your success, but don’t allow your success to blind you to your continued growth. Co-CEO of SAP, Bill McDermott said it best, “Stay hungry, stay humble”. So in redefining success, we celebrate and appreciate our accomplishment, take the opportunity to learn and then continue our growth by setting a new and bigger goal.
Taking action- Let’s recap:
- Life is Hard- accept it, be courageous and take action
- Your Attitude will determine your Altitude
- 1% better Every day
- Your WHY Power
- Redefining Failure and Success
Now what? Simple get moving! Look at your life right now and write down some BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) for the next month, 3 months, 6 months and year that are intrinsically linked to your purpose, values and WHY and start taking action to achieving them. Promise yourself that you will NEVER give up. Promise yourself that you will persist until you succeed! Know that you will fail along the way and that you will LEARN from those failures, move on and get better. Know that you will succeed along the way, stop, celebrate and learn and move on and create bigger goals. We only get 1 chance at this life and I see no reason why we can’t make the absolute best of the allotted time we have been given.
